Nasty Nas… The Greatest of All East Coast Rappers
Based on body of work alone, Nas gets a 9 out of 10. Young rap fans today would even agree.
The Source even got it right back in the day: the Illmatic album reigns as a classic rap album.
You can go deep with the review when it comes to Nas. The guy is on another planet when it comes to rap skills. He’s crazy smart and the boy has street knowledge that makes you sit in your car seat and listen to his stories.
Nas Gets Overlooked as The King
At the end of the day, it’s fair to say Nas is and was the King of New York during the days of Notorious BIG.
Since it’s the 20 year homage to Big today, let’s also pay respects to the man who was for some reason overshadowed by Smalls regarding the throne of New York rap.
Biggie Smalls had talent for sure, but Nas displayed genius insight when it comes to street culture and the little things that real gangsters live by.
For example, Nas has a lyric in Black Republican stating, “Standing on the roof of my building….”
Being that I come from a rural area, I have no building to stand on top of, however, I can find a big hill around my way to stand on and look over the horizon. And I get why he used to look off the roof of his building because he was trying to get away from his trife-life environment to think.
It’s things like this this that makes Nas relate to others even if they live in the country. The man used his mind. Ans he made it a point to reflect on life.
Theres something special about people that separate themselves the pack at a young age.
My man Froggy Fresh even gives Nas a shout in his Christmas song saying he got the best rap album of all time, Illmatic.
