If you ask any man what his favorite moment is besides landing citation largemouth, it would be time where he’s looking for more fishing equipment.
I really enjoy this topic and not because I use a ton of equipment to fish. I enjoy looking for fishing gear because it’s an extension of your style.
That said, the largemouth bass fishing industry supplies every one of us who love this game, a chance to enhance and build off what they know. And that opportunity arises the very first day you pick out your first rod setup and tackle.
Love tackle too, because as a minimalist I still pack a variety of gear that heft’s the job done.
I’m a kid in a candy shop though when it comes to gear. It all looks great, but in reality, I stick to processes that work and generally buy the same basic essentials when I buy a rod and or start with a fresh tackle box.
The key to this sport is organization and keeping your set ups secure and neat. I’ll get into that a little later down the line, but it’s good to know, that when you buy your first rods, reels and lures, you should always think portability and how your tackle is stored.
Rods and Reels
The men and women that really love fishing for largemouth Bass generally have the same rods and reels. A lot of rods and reels doesn’t mean a whole lot but if you can afford at least three, your rotations will move much quicker. Three rods and reels enough for traveling on bank lines. Anymore than that is overkill. However, if you have s boat, 6 to 8 Rods is a good number.
The bulk of the rods sold today are high-modulous graphite rods. However, these more stiff types of rods are vulnerable to snapping when using thick lines. Therefore, you may want to consider getting s fiber-glass composite rod.
The Flipping Stick
These rods are long fast action, heavy power rods that are perfect for flipping plastic lizards and 3 ounce jigs into small pockets of water. Areas you’ll wAnt this rod for is tight lily pad zones and sporadic weed covers. They typically come in 7 1/2 models which makes it tough to store for some folks, but there are telescopic versions of this rod too.
Flipping sticks at your local sports store usually come with a baitcaster set up. They are heavy duty rods built for 17-25 pound test line. They’re sturdy rods used to fish for hawgs and come through for you in the clutch when you’re tugging hard. It’s a great rod for people that get hung up a lot too. Seriously, you can get your lures back from a long distance if you pull hard enough.
That said, don’t be fooled, because s flipping stick set up with a baitcaster reel work well with casting far distances. Heavy buzz baits work well with these setups as well. Get one of these for sure.
Pitching Rods/ Sticks
A pitching rod is as it suggests. But more in favor of underhand casting. It’s a lower trajectory rod designed for a finesse style of fishing. These are your go to rods when you start your boat launch and begin beating the shores. It’s a great rod to cast under hanging tree structikures that hover the water, docks, and other tight structural obstructions you encounter. Also worth noting is its ideal performance in tight knit trees that riddle the middle of a reservoir.
The standard pitching rod is usually close to six and a half feet long. It’s typically considered s medium-heavy power rod with fast action. Since the reel designed for the rod is smaller, your cast are not as long.
High capacity reels that are large rod are not ideal for a pitching rod. And as a side note, this is something that took me a good while to get. Being a broke white boy, I would try all types of combos when my gear started breaking on me.
But my gear breaking was a good experience overall because it launched me into getting creative with my set ups.
Note to self: write an article on making creative reel and rod combos.
Overall, a small reel with a narrow spool is ideal to pair up with a pitching stick. This provides your casts with less momentum than a wider, heavier spool. This in turn allows you have thumb control over your line. Thumb control is beneficial because it helps you out with backlash.
